How It Works

Pregabalin works by binding to voltage-gated calcium channels in the central nervous system, helping reduce the release of certain neurotransmitters involved in pain signaling. This decreases nerve overactivity, relieves neuropathic pain, and helps control seizure activity.

Usage & Safety

Dosage

Take Pregabalin with or without food. Swallow the capsules whole with water. Your doctor may adjust the dose depending on kidney function and treatment response.

Side Effects

Common side effects include dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, blurred vision, swelling of the hands or feet, weight gain, and difficulty concentrating. These effects are usually mild and may improve as your body adjusts to the medication.

Rare but serious side effects include severe allergic reactions, vision changes, muscle-related problems, or suicidal thoughts. Seek immediate medical attention if any of these occur.

Drug Interactions

Pregabalin may interact with:

• Opioid pain relievers
• Central nervous system (CNS) depressants
• Medicines that may increase fluid retention (edema)
• Certain diabetes medications
• Some antacids, which may affect treatment response

Indications

Pregabalin is indicated for the treatment of:

• Neuropathic pain associated with diabetic peripheral neuropathy
• Postherpetic neuralgia (nerve pain following shingles)
• Neuropathic pain caused by spinal cord injury
• Fibromyalgia
• Adjunctive therapy for adults with partial-onset seizures

In some cases, healthcare providers may also prescribe Pregabalin for generalized anxiety disorder where appropriate.

When Not to Use

Do not use Pregabalin if you:

• Are allergic to pregabalin or any of the ingredients in the medicine.
• Have experienced a previous serious hypersensitivity reaction to Pregabalin.

Precautions

• Use caution while driving or operating heavy machinery, as the medicine may cause dizziness or drowsiness.
• Patients with kidney impairment may require dose adjustment.
• Monitor for mood changes, depression, or suicidal thoughts, particularly during the early stages of treatment.
• Older adults may be more susceptible to side effects such as dizziness and falls.
• Contact your healthcare provider if you notice unusual swelling or significant weight gain.

Warnings

• Pregabalin may cause serious allergic reactions, including rash, hives, swelling of the face or throat, blistering of the skin, or difficulty breathing. Seek emergency medical attention if these symptoms occur.
• The medicine may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or behavior in some patients. Close monitoring is recommended, especially at the start of treatment.
• Do not stop taking Pregabalin suddenly, as abrupt discontinuation may lead to withdrawal symptoms or increase the risk of seizures. Your doctor should supervise any dose reduction.
• Avoid drinking alcohol during treatment, as it can increase drowsiness and dizziness.

Pregnancy

Pregabalin should only be used during pregnancy if the expected benefit outweighs the potential risk to the unborn baby. Since the medicine passes into breast milk, breastfeeding is generally not recommended unless advised by a healthcare professional. Consult your physician before using this medicine during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
