Used For
- Local and regional anesthesia during surgical procedures
- Spinal anesthesia, when specifically indicated
- Pain control during and after certain procedures
- Producing temporary numbness in a targeted area
How It Works
Bupivacaine belongs to the amide-type local anesthetic group. It works by blocking sodium channels in nerve cells, preventing the transmission of electrical signals along the nerves. This temporarily interrupts pain sensation in the treated area.
Usage & Safety
Bupicain-SP® should be administered only by a qualified healthcare professional. The dose and route of administration depend on the type of procedure, the area being anesthetized, the patient's condition, and the required duration of anesthesia.
Possible side effects may include dizziness, headache, nausea, low blood pressure, numbness beyond the intended area, or temporary weakness. Rarely, excessive blood levels can cause serious effects on the central nervous system or heart.
Indications
- Surgical anesthesia
- Regional nerve blocks
- Local anesthesia
- Spinal anesthesia where clinically appropriate
- Procedure-related pain management
When Not to Use
Bupivacaine should not be used in patients with a known hypersensitivity to bupivacaine or other amide-type local anesthetics. Certain routes of administration may have additional contraindications and must be determined by a healthcare professional.
Precautions
Use carefully in patients with cardiovascular disease, liver impairment, neurological disorders, or conditions that may increase sensitivity to local anesthetics. The injection should only be given using the appropriate technique and monitoring facilities.
Warnings
Bupivacaine is a potent local anesthetic and accidental intravenous administration or excessive dosing can cause severe toxicity. It should therefore only be administered by trained medical personnel with appropriate monitoring and emergency equipment available.
Pregnancy
Use during pregnancy should be based on a careful assessment by a healthcare professional, considering the clinical need and the chosen route of administration.
Storage
Store according to the manufacturer's recommended conditions, protect from excessive heat and direct sunlight, and keep out of reach of children.
