Rocephin Inj. (Ceftriaxone) by Roche

Used For

Rocephin (Ceftriaxone) is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used for the treatment of various moderate to severe bacterial infections. It is commonly used when injectable antibiotic therapy is required.

How It Works

Ceftriaxone works by interfering with the formation of the bacterial cell wall. This weakens the bacterial cell wall and ultimately causes susceptible bacteria to die.

Indications

It may be used for the treatment of susceptible bacterial infections, including:

  • Lower respiratory tract infections
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Skin and soft-tissue infections
  • Intra-abdominal infections
  • Bone and joint infections
  • Septicemia (bloodstream infections)
  • Meningitis
  • Certain sexually transmitted bacterial infections
  • Surgical infection prevention, when clinically indicated

Usage & Safety

Dosage:
The dose and duration depend on the patient's age, weight, type and severity of infection, and clinical condition. Ceftriaxone should be administered by a qualified healthcare professional according to the prescribed regimen.

Common Side Effects:

  • Pain or discomfort at injection site
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Skin rash
  • Changes in liver enzymes

Serious Side Effects:
Severe allergic reactions, persistent or severe diarrhea, or unusual changes in blood counts may occur rarely and require immediate medical attention.

Drug Interactions:
Tell the healthcare professional about all medicines being used. Particular caution may be required with calcium-containing IV solutions in certain patients, as well as other medicines that may affect bleeding or kidney/liver function.

When Not to Use

Do not use Ceftriaxone in patients with a known serious allergy to ceftriaxone, cephalosporins, or certain severe beta-lactam antibiotic allergies. It should also be avoided in specific newborn situations where ceftriaxone is contraindicated.

Precautions

  • Use only under medical supervision.
  • Inform the doctor about any previous antibiotic allergies.
  • Complete the prescribed course unless the healthcare professional advises otherwise.
  • Prolonged use may lead to overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms.
  • Dose adjustment or additional monitoring may be required in certain patients with significant liver or kidney problems.

Warnings

Ceftriaxone should not be self-administered. Severe allergic reactions can occur even in patients without a previous known allergy. Seek immediate medical attention for difficulty breathing, facial swelling, severe rash, or other signs of an allergic reaction.

Pregnancy

Ceftriaxone should be used during pregnancy only when considered necessary by a healthcare professional after evaluating the potential benefits and risks.

Storage

Store according to the manufacturer's instructions. Keep the vial and supplied solvent away from excessive heat and moisture and out of reach of children. Prepared solution should be handled and stored according to professional/pharmacy instructions.
