Montelukast is from a group of medicines called leukotriene receptor antagonists (LTRAs). LTRAs work by stopping the chemicals in your body that narrow your airways. These chemicals are called leukotrienes. Montelukast helps stop your airways from narrowing (caused by inflammation). USAGE AND SAFETY Dosage Montelukast Sodium Side Effects Abdominal pain , Headache , Thirst , Rarely anaphylaxis , Angioedema , seizure , GI upset . Drug Interactions Phenobarbital , Phenytoin , Rifampicin , Other enzyme inducers , gemfibrozil. Indication Asthma , Perennial Allergic Rhinitus , Acute prevention of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction , Relief of symptoms of allergic rhinitis. When not to Use Hypersensitivity to any component of this product. PRECAUTIONS Precaution Patients should be advised never to use oral montelukast to treat acute asthma attacks and to keep their usual appropriate rescue medication for this purpose readily available. If an acute attack occurs, a short-acting inhaled ß-agonist should be used. Patients should seek their doctor's advice as soon as possible if they need more inhalations of short-acting ß-agonists than usual. WARNINGS Warning 1 Montelukast should not be abruptly substituted for inhaled or oral corticosteroids. Warning 2 Treatment with montelukast does not alter the need for patients with aspirin sensitive asthma to avoid taking aspirin and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Warning 3 Patient and physician should be alert for neuropsychiatric events. Patients should be instructed to notify their health care practitioner if any such changes occur.
